Face it! Men’s makeup is a booming beauty business

For the longest time, men wearing makeup have been used as a comedic trope in Indian films. With plump red lips, unruly wigs, and rosy cheeks, they either impersonated women to fool cops in heist thrillers or were made the butt of ‘gay’ jokes in scenes with a roaring laugh track. Cut to 2025, however, and the world of men’s makeup is on our screens for a different reason.
In an episode of popular startup pitching reality show ‘Shark Tank India’, Ahmedabad’s Rahul Shah stood in front of the judges, pitching Yaan Man – India’s first makeup brand exclusively for men. Shah, who worked for five years as a cosmetic formulator in the US, returned to India in 2018 to break taboos.
“In the US, I saw a lot of heterosexual men from Asia and other parts of the world using makeup to hide their dark circles, acne, and improve their skincare. But in India, most brands who even catered to men were only focusing on beard and hair care,” Shah says.
The path was not that easy, though. When he discussed his idea of selling concealers, foundation, and tinted moisturisers for men suited to Indian skin tones and weather conditions, people around him, including his friends, laughed. Most of them were reluctant to even use a proper face wash or apply sunscreen, forget anything else. Despite the taboos, he knew there was a growing market for it. After all, traditional players like Lakme India and MAC Cosmetics have introduced products for men, while representation has been growing – thanks to the glassy skin of K-drama heartthrobs and the videos of male beauty influencers like Ankush Bahuguna raking in millions of views.
In fact, data by consumer research firm Mintel shows that one in every five beauty and personal care products launched in India since July 2022 was targeted at men – the biggest share for the category in the Asia-Pacific markets. Though the Indian market is smaller than that of China and Japan, the report adds, it is growing at a much faster rate, with the Indian male grooming category valued at more than Rs 10,000 crore.
Social media has been the main catalyst for this shift, says Mumbai-based makeup artist Karan Chugh. “For the longest time, heterosexual men associated taking care of their physical appearance to only going with the gym and oiling their beards. However, with access to trends from across the world, they realise now that this need not be the case.” In terms of products, concealers and tinted lip balms have become quite popular in the last year or two, he adds.
A number of brands Chugh works with are also hiring male models for campaigns centred around beauty. A recent social media campaign he worked on for Nykaa Cosmetics, for instance, features 28-year-old Hindi film actor Gurfateh Singh Pirzada wearing nothing but an apron (and makeup). Centred around Valentine’s Day, Pirzada stars as ‘Pookieman’, posing with a bunch of gender-neutral lip products, with names like Lip Glaze, Lip Cloud, and Butter Bomb – quite a shift from the matte black ‘machoness’ that male grooming products have traditionally relied on.
This shift is not just limited to the sets of a reality show or the glittery world of Mumbai. Mohammed Maaz Khan, who hails from Rampur village in Uttar Pradesh, says he was more into fashion than all the other boys in his college. During Covid, he started posting grooming content online. A few of them went viral, and he was even featured on Instagram’s official account. A chemical engineering graduate, Khan went on to pursue a course in cosmetology. However, the journey wasn’t smooth as body butter. “Initially, I faced a lot of criticism. A number of people asked me if I was transgender and used slurs. They couldn’t digest what they were seeing,” Khan says.
His attempt to normalise makeup led him to start posting the beauty routines of Bollywood and TV actors. “Many men admire actors and aspire to look like them but aren’t aware of the products they use to look that way,” Khan adds. He soon began posting about the benefits of using face serums, BB creams, CC creams and tinted lip balms, along with advice for tackling dark circles and wrinkles.
Soon, his inbox was flooded with requests from curious men who wanted to know more. Several grooms-to-be reached out too, to enquire about the right products to look good on their wedding day. “A lot of them would never have walked up to someone in real life and asked these questions out of fear of being ridiculed. But messaging someone online helped them overcome that,” points out Khan, who has over 6 lakh followers on Instagram today.
Meanwhile, Yaan Man founder Shah says the broader shift in Indian men’s mentality will not happen overnight, but the response from users has been far better than expected. “A lot of men are still hesitant to post public reviews or talk about it. But they’re buying more and more products,” he says. Now, he wants to double down on them, with four more products already in the pipeline scheduled to be launched later this year.

Jaisalmer: The India-Egypt joint special force exercise Cyclone-III culminated at the Mahajan Field Firing Range on Feb 23 after 14 days of rigorous joint training demonstrating their combat prowess and supremacy. The exercise facilitated both special forces to practise counter-terrorism operations, combat medical skills, demolition skills, and Special Heliborne Operations (SHBO) in a collaborative environment.

SHILLONG: Six Bangladeshis, some of whom worked in Mumbai as masons earlier, were apprehended by BSF personnel in Meghalaya Sunday.
The incident took place after they crossed over from Bangladesh to Meghalaya once more to go to Mumbai in search of employment. Acting on a tip-off, BSF personnel apprehended the six Bangladeshi nationals, four from West Jaintia Hills district and two from South Garo Hills district, in well-coordinated operations.
Among those apprehended also included a woman who had planned to visit Mumbai for treatment of her husband, a BSF spokesman said. Meghalaya has a 443 km-long border with Bangladesh, about 20 per cent of which is left unfenced due to difficult terrain.

| Photo Credit: E. LAKSHMI NARAYANAN

PMK Leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday said the recent arrest of fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy should be seen as an attack on India’s sovereignty, and demanded the Central government to issue a strong warning to the Sri Lankan government.

In a statement, Dr. Anbumani said though the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen crossing the maritime boundary should be seen as a humanitarian and livelihood-related problem, as decided by the India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on Fisheries at a meeting held on October 29, it was not being considered in that manner.

“During the recent visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to India, he had discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which the same stance was reiterated. However, the Sri Lankan Navy arbitrarily arrests Tamil Nadu fishermen as if they were engaging in cross-border terrorism. This is a direct challenge to India’s sovereignty,” he said.

Dr. Anbumani said the Tamil Nadu government has failed in this issue and said they should try to find a permanent solution to the issue instead of merely writing letters to the Central government.

The US deported fourth batch of illegal Indian immigrants via Panama. The aircraft landed in Delhi, NDTV reported on Sunday. As many as 12 illegal Indian immigrants were brought back from the US in the latest flight.

According to news agency PTI, four more deportees, hailing from Punjab, arrived in Amritsar on Sunday. “It is learnt that the four were among the 12 illegal Indian immigrants brought back from the US on a flight via Panama that landed in Delhi earlier in the day,” the report added.

Confirming their arrival, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney said they hailed from Gurdaspur, Patiala and Jalandhar districts.

They arrived at the Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport here from Delhi via a commercial flight, she added.

Sources said Harpreet Singh and Maninder Dutt were from Gurdaspur, Jugraj Singh hailed from Jalandhar and Jatinder Singh was from Nabha in Patiala district.

Earlier, three batches of illegal Indian immigrants were brought back from the US in a military aircraft on February 5, 15 and 16 amid a crackdown by the Donald Trump government against illegal immigrants.

Many people from Punjab and other states, who entered the US through “donkey routes” — an illegal and risky pathway used by migrants to enter America or other illegal means by spending lakhs of rupees — are now facing deportation.

The landing of US military aircraft carrying illegal Indian immigrants at the Amritsar airport had triggered sharp reactions from several political leaders in Punjab.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had questioned the Centre’s move to land planes bringing deportees at Amritsar airport, accusing it of trying to defame Punjab under a conspiracy.

Mann had even asked the central government not to make the holy city a “deport centre”. He had also said that deportation was a national problem, but it was being made to appear that only Punjabis migrate illegally.

Amid a raging political controversy over USAID’s alleged role in influencing Indian elections, the latest annual report of the finance ministry has disclosed that the agency funded seven projects worth USD 750 million in 2023-24.

A USAID and American flag flag fly outside the USAID building in Washington DC on February 3, 2025.(AFP)

“Currently, seven projects worth a total budget of USD 750 million (approx.) are being implemented by USAID in partnership with Government of India,” as per the Finance Ministry annual report for 2023-24.

For the financial year 2023-24, an obligation of a total of USD 97 million (about 825 crore) has been made by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) under the seven projects, it said.

Also Read | ‘Deeply troubling’: Govt as USAID row heats up

The Department of Economic Affairs under the Finance Ministry which is the nodal department for bilateral funding arrangements has also shared the details of projects funded in 2023-24 in the report.

During the year, no funding was made for enhancing voter turnout but to projects related to agriculture & food security programme; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); Renewable Energy; disaster management and health.

Also Read | ‘Facts will come out’: S Jaishankar on Trump’s claims about voter turnout fund

Besides, it said, funds were committed for Sustainable Forests and Climate Adaptation Program and Energy Efficiency Technology Commercialization and Innovation Project.

The United States of America’s bilateral development assistance to India started in 1951 and it is mainly administered through USAID. Since its commencement, USAID has provided economic assistance of over USD 17 billion to India in various sectors for over 555 projects.

Political controversy erupted in the country earlier this month after the Elon Musk-led DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) claimed that it had cancelled a USD 21 million grant to India to boost “voter turnout”.

US President Donald Trump also repeatedly claimed that USAID under the previous administration led by Joe Biden allocated USD 21 million in funding to India for ‘voter turnout’.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said the information put out by the Trump administration is “concerning” and that the government is looking into it.

The USAID was allowed in India “in good faith, to do good faith activities”, and suggestions are being made out of America that “there are activities which are in bad faith,” Jaishankar had said.

On the other hand, the Congress party on Sunday accused the BJP of indulging in “anti-national work” by spreading “fake news from America” and asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also have to answer as to why the government is silent when US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are “insulting” India repeatedly.

Congress general secretary in-charge Jairam Ramesh said, “BJP is a procession of liars and illiterates. The news about USD 21 million, on which the BJP and their bootlickers were jumping on, turned out to be fake. The USD 21 million in 2022 was not for ‘voter turnout’ in India, but for Bangladesh.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art cancer hospital at the Bageshwar Dham on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur on Sunday, where he laid the foundation stone for Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute. PM Modi said the government has decided that cancer medicines will be cheaper and day care centres will be opened in every district of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, “In this year’s budget, many announcements have been made to fight cancer, and Modi has decided that cancer medicines will be made cheaper.  Cancer day care centres will be opened in every district of the country in the next 3 years…”

PM Modi praised Mahakumbh

During his address, PM Modi criticised those opposing the country’s religious and cultural traditions and termed the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj as the “Maha Kumbh of Unity”.

“Nowadays we see that a group of leaders mock religion, divide people, and often receive support from foreign powers to weaken the nation and faith. For centuries, those who hate Hinduism have attacked our beliefs, temples, culture, and traditions. They target our progressive religion and aim to break our unity. Amidst this, Dhirendra Shastri has been making people aware of the mantra of unity in the country for a long time. And now, with his new initiative to build a cancer institute, he brings hope for society and humanity. That means here in Bageshwar Dham, you will get the blessings of bhajan, food and healthy life,” PM Modi said.

India’s first astronaut, Wing Commander (retd) Rakesh Sharma, has said that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Gaganyaan mission, slated for launch next year, would bring “a lot of information than initially thought of”.

India’s first astronaut, Wing Commander (retd) Rakesh Sharma, speaks at the Tripura Literature Festival in Agartala on Saturday.

“Gaganyan mission will happen next year. It would be a flight with an Indian sitting on an India-made launcher that was inaugurated from space port of India – overall an Indian effort”, the legendary astronaut told media persons during an interaction at the three-day Tripura Literature Festival in Agartala on Saturday.

Gaganyaan mission is set to carry a three-member crew to space and bring them back safely to earth. Its Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is slated to be the first astronaut from India to fly to the International Space Station (ISS). He is currently in Houston, USA and is preparing to fly with a SpaceX spacecraft next year.

“He (Shukla) is one of the four (astronauts) we have selected. He is in Houston and is preparing to fly with SpaceX. I was among the selection team,” Rakesh Sharma said.

Asked about astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been stranded for nine months at ISS, Rakesh Sharma said, “During test flights, some problems developed in that particular spacecraft due to which it was felt that it was unsafe for her to return in the same spacecraft. However, a spacecraft of Elon Musk is going to bring her. They are professionals. It’s a personal issue how to accept that as you were planning to return but you couldn’t be due to reasons that are not in your control. So, let her come back and tell what she felt.”

Recalling his journey to space, Rakesh Sharma said that he was passionate to see himself as a fighter pilot and he never had aspiration to be an astronaut. He, however, said that he found himself lucky to get the opportunity to become the first from India to have stepped into space in 1984 when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi decided to send someone from Indian Air Force to space as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme after experts of ISRO said they were not prepared.

Sharma became the first Indian to go to space aboard the Soviet Union made Soyuz T-11 on April 2 in 1984 that was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.

A biopic on Sharma called Saara Jahan Se Accha, directed by Mahesh Mathai, is on the floors, however Sharma didn’t speak about the movie.

He stressed on the need to take care of the environment of Earth and the need to concentrate on human existence rather than differences.

Pakistan would look to draw inspiration from the 2017 Champions Trophy final triumph over India in London but also need to scale up their performance in every department.

However, Pakistan will be without the services of Fakhar Zaman as the batter injured himself during the New Zealand game. Imam-ul-Haq has been called in as a replacement for Zaman, who was ruled out of the tournament.

In ODI cricket, especially in white-ball formats, he has been India’s biggest match-winner as a batsman, alongside Virat Kohli. If Rohit is struggling but still gets runs, that’s dangerous for the opposition,”

“If he’s in form, he will score a century in 60 balls. That’s his quality—once he gets going, he’s not just hitting fours; he’s clearing the ropes with sixes. He is also one of the best players of the short ball. Even if someone bowls at 145-150 kmph, Rohit has the ability to hook it effortlessly. His strike rate is always between 120-140, and on his day, he can single-handedly win you the game” the former cricketer added.

India vs Pakistan LIVE SCORE: Ricky Ponting says beating India will be ‘hard’ for Pakistan

India vs Pakistan LIVE SCORE:  “It is going to be hard for Pakistan now,” Ponting was quoted by ICC as saying

“We spoke only a few days ago and my prediction for that game was that Pakistan would beat New Zealand and probably beat them quite comfortably. Fakhar’s injury did not help their cause but they were chasing a very big total on the back of some great batting from New Zealand. To post 320, it was always going to be a hard run chase.”

“On their day, they were as capable as anybody. And now, having lost to New Zealand, they are going to have to be at their absolute best against India to beat them. India has got off to a great start, Pakistan not so much. And with that injury that we spoke about, I think it’s going to be hard for them to bounce back, but they can,” the former Aussie captain added.

India vs Pakistan LIVE SCORE: Aaqib Javed defends Pakistani bowlers

India vs Pakistan LIVE SCORE: Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed while defending his bowlers said, “See, one thing is that when you see a full match, you focus on the whole match. If there your average score is 320 to 350, then you focus on one or two bowlers. How did they give more than 60 or 70? At times ,you don’t get such conditions. What I just said about fitness level – everyone is now realising this everyone has to improve. But I don’t think if you concede 80 in one match – it is not the 90’s cricket that we used to give 60 and not be able to sleep for 6 months. Now this game is fast, if we make 350 runs, then it’s possible that you give away 70-80 runs. But, the game tomorrow will be different. We cannot see that he has given 80 runs, now what to do with him. Every game starts differently and finishes differently,”
