World news: Arctic sea ice hits record low peak, breaking 47-year record
Arctic sea ice has hit its lowest peak since satellite monitoring began 47 years ago, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported on Thursday. The maximum ice extent for 2025 was recorded at 14.33 million square kilometers on March 22, breaking the previous record low of 14.41 million square kilometers set in 2017.
NSIDC senior scientist Walt Meier called it a clear sign of long-term ice loss driven by climate change. He stressed that beyond the record itself, the steady decline in Arctic sea ice across all seasons remains a major concern. The finding comes as Antarctic sea ice also experiences historically low levels.
