G Balasubramanian, High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, said India and the Maldives share a longstanding relationship rooted in geography and history.

“India and the Maldives have a very strong relationship. We have been historical neighbours, geographical neighbours, and therefore our relationship has continued over centuries,” he said, as quoted by news agency ANI, adding that during the Indus Valley civilisation, people from Lothal used to travel to Lhaviyani and Noonu Atolls in the northern Maldives.
