Report: ‘Little to no’ iPhone SE inventory remaining in Apple Stores

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, supply of the current generation iPhone SE, which debuted in 2022, is quickly shrinking. This is unsurprising, given the fact that we’re all expecting a new iPhone SE to debut in just a couple months. However, it is uniquely interesting, as it indicates that Apple likely has no plans to keep the current generation model around.

This spring, likely around April, Apple is going to release a new iPhone SE. Some suggest that it might be called iPhone 16E instead. It’s going to be the biggest redesign in the history of iPhone SE, with an all new design, a 6.1″ OLED display, an upgrade to Face ID, USB-C, and much more.

The new iPhone SE model is also going to gain support for Apple Intelligence, bringing features like Genmoji and Notification Summaries to Apple’s entire smartphone lineup. However, with all of those upgrades, the new iPhone SE is going to cost more. Rumors suggest the new model will have a higher price tag of at least $499.

Typically, when Apple introduces new models at a higher price, they keep around an older model at a reduced price, to better serve markets. For example, Apple kept around the M1 MacBook Air model for a couple years at a lower price, as the redesigned M2 MacBook Air started at a $200 higher price tag.

For better or for worse though, that probably won’t be the case with iPhone SE 3. As appealing as it’d be for Apple to sell a ~$300 iPhone to attract new buyers, that likely won’t be the case, given the fact that iPhone SE 3 production has seemingly already ramped down:

The drawing down of inventory is a reliable sign that a new model is coming. But it also suggests that Apple probably won’t keep the current version around — at a reduced price — after the update is here. That seems like a missed opportunity, since a cheap iPhone could’ve helped Apple make inroads in some markets. The current SE costs $429, and the new one might be more than that given its enhanced features. 

Personally, this news doesn’t really disappoint me. Even though a brand-new sub-$400 iPhone would be appealing, it’s important to remember that Apple based the current generation iPhone SE on the 2017 iPhone 8. The iPhone SE 3 is dated technology, stacked with a good chipset and good cameras. Other than that, it doesn’t hold up to Android competition in the $300-400 price range.

Apple also stopped selling the iPhone SE 3 within the European Union late last year. The new USB-C regulation law went into effect, and Apple could no longer sell any lightning iPhones, including iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3, in the European Union.

If you want an iPhone SE 3 currently, for whatever reason – you can still order it online and receive it within a few days. It’s just that in-person Apple Store inventory is running shy.

Apple is widely rumored to be planning a new iPhone SE, and there is now a fresh hint that the device’s launch is approaching.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said iPhone SE inventory is “quickly” dwindling at a “large number” of Apple Store locations in the U.S., and he believes this is a “reliable sign” that a new model is on the horizon.

The current iPhone SE is still available to order on Apple’s online store.

According to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 4 will be released around the quarter mark of 2025. That means the device will likely be released this March or April, just like all previous iPhone SE models were.

The new iPhone SE is said to have a similar design as the base iPhone 14. Rumored features for the device include a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, a USB-C port, a single 48-megapixel rear camera, a newer A-series chip and an increased 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence support, and the first Apple-designed 5G modem.

The current iPhone SE looks similar to the iPhone 8, with outdated features such as a Touch ID button, Lightning port, and thick bezels around the display. Pricing starts at $429, but at least a slight price increase seems probable for the next model.

Gurman: Redesigned Apple Mail app coming to Mac and iPad in April

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s new Mail app is going to make its way to the Mac very soon, with macOS 15.4. Apple introduced the new Mail app to the iPhone back in December with iOS 18.2, but it hasn’t made its way to any other platform since.

Update: In a follow-up tweet, Mark Gurman has clarified that the redesigned Mail app will also be making its way to iPad around the same time. Original story below:

Surprisingly, we’ve already seen what the new Mail app will look like on macOS. Back when Apple introduced the new M4 Macs in October, we got a small look at the new Mail app for macOS in one of the unveilings. This wasn’t some groundbreaking leak, since the design had already been unveiled on the iPhone back at WWDC, but it was interesting, since there weren’t any signs of the new Mail app coming to macOS quite yet.

Then, in December, iOS 18.3 and macOS 15.3 beta started rolling out. While macOS 15.3 did bring Genmoji to macOS, it didn’t bring the new Mail app to the Mac, leaving many wondering when it’d debut.

However, according to Gurman, this will be changing very soon with the upcoming macOS 15.4 release, which will likely enter beta in the coming weeks, and debut in April:

But there’s another, more under-the-radar feature coming in April as well: The Mac will get the upgraded Mail app that uses AI to prioritize messages and sort content into different inboxes. Right now, iPad and iPhone users are able to tap into the feature — which is terrific — but Mac customers have been left behind. That changes with macOS 15.4, I’m told. For those not familiar with the feature: It sorts mail into a primary category, as well as ones for transactions, promotions, updates and all mail.

Gurman states that the new Mail app is currently available for iPad users, though that isn’t actually the case quite yet, neither in iPadOS 18.2 nor iPadOS 18.3. Hopefully, we see the new Mail app debut for iPad users soon, with the release of iPadOS 18.4. Only time will tell.
