CINDY WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW LAST NIGHT THIS STARTED WITH RAIN AND TURNED OVER TO SNOW SO THERE COULD BE SOME ICE. I CAN CONFIRM THAT WHEN I WAS SHOVELING MY SIDEWALK THIS MORNING, YES, THERE WAS SOME ICE DEFINITELY UNDER THERE. SO IF YOU’RE GOING OUT THIS MORNING, CERTAINLY BE AWARE OF THAT AGAIN HERE IN BOSTON ABOUT THE SNOW. IT’S GOING TO BE MANAGEABLE. BUT REALLY IT’S WHAT’S COMING LATER. THAT IS THE CONCERN FROM CITY LEADERS. AND ALSO WHEN IT COMES TO DRIVING CONDITIONS, IT’S A GOOD THING THIS IS HAPPENING ON A HOLIDAY. SO THANKFULLY THE ROADS HERE IN BOSTON PROBABLY WON’T BE TOO BAD. BUT IF YOU ARE HEADING OUT TODAY, HERE’S WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY ABOUT HOW YOU SHOULD BE TAKING IT. CAREFUL WITH THIS HARD FREEZE COMING AFTER THE SNOWFALL. WE’RE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT ICE. PEOPLE OFTENTIMES MIGHT NOT REMEMBER THAT WHEN IT’S ICY OR SNOWY, YOU REALLY NEED TO DRIVE A LITTLE BIT SLOWER AND INCREASE THAT FOLLOWING DISTANCE. SO THE CITY OF BOSTON SAID OVERNIGHT ON SOCIAL MEDIA THEY HAD 600 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT OUT TRYING TO CLEAR THE SNOW HERE IN BOYLSTON ON BOYLSTON STREET. THEY’VE DONE A GOOD JOB. AGAIN, WE’RE SEEING THE BLACKTOP, EVEN THE SIDEWALKS LOOK RELATIVELY WELL. BUT AGAIN, IF THERE’S ANY SNOW ON THE GROUND, IT IS GOING TO BE THAT HARD FREEZE. AND IT’S GOING TO BE HERE FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. SO AS MUCH AS IT MAYBE PAINS YOU, GET OUT EARLY, DO SOME CLEANING, AND HOPEFULLY YOU’LL BE BETTER PREPARED THAN I WAS. Call a SPADE a SPADE and all that. It seemed like a good opener and I don’t recall using it before. Today it was tremendously lucky, leaving me with just 9 remaining solutions. One of these—and an unlikely one at that—was SQUID, though I leaned heavily toward SOLID. Then I thought, Squid Game! I still need to watch Season 2 of Netflix’s enormously popular TV show. Wouldn’t it be more fun if the answer was SQUID? And tossing logic and reason out the window, I went for it. Lucky for me, it was the Wordle!

I get 2 points for guessing in two today and 1 point for beating the Bot, who has no cultural references to lean on. It guessed in four. Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “squid” likely originated as sailors’ slang in the 17th century, possibly from a New England dialect. It may be related to the word “squirt”, referring to the creature’s ability to eject ink. The exact origin remains uncertain.
