Tokyo’s Nikkei Index drops 3% ahead of US tariffs
Tokyo’s Nikkei index fell sharply on Monday, dropping 3% in early trade as investors reacted to impending US tariffs set to take effect this week under President Donald Trump’s administration. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index declined 3.02%, losing 1,122.77 points to reach 35,997.56. Meanwhile, the broader Topix index slid 2.86%, shedding 78.85 points to 2,678.40. The new tariffs, set to begin Wednesday, will target a range of US imports, including cars, trucks, and auto parts, alongside country-specific levies.
